PRESS: Russian authorities really want to decipher all Web traffic
MOSCOW, Sep 26 (PRIME) -- The Russian communications service and the Federal Security Service are really putting forward the idea of decoding and analyzing the whole Internet traffic of the country’s citizens, business daily Kommersant reported Monday, quoting Natalya Kasperskaya, a member of a working group at the presidential administration.
“The topic of a transfer of the SSL certificate to state authorities popped up; it’s being lobbied by the communications watchdog and the Federal Security Service, which need it. This request for the SSL certificate is an absolutely right thing, because we have a big slice of the Internet that is beyond control by the country, and it’s not good,” Kasperskaya, who also heads information security provider InfoWatch, told the daily.
“Multiple entities collect data on the global scale, but, unfortunately, these ‘multiple entities’ are located outside our country, which is not right. You put a mobile device into your pocket and your privacy comes to an end; let’s face the truth.”
The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, or the Federal Security Service declined to comment on the matter.
Mass media earlier reported that the security service along with the communications and trade ministries were discussing not only data gathering from connection networks and their storage in compliance with the data retention laws, but also deciphering the whole Internet traffic.
